Hello again Year 5

I hope you’ve all had a good week.

Over the last few days, I’ve been making phone calls to our class. I’ve enjoyed speaking to your parents and in some cases I’ve even spoken to you! It’s great to hear that you are all doing fine and are managing to continue with your learning at home. It sounds like you’ve also been doing lots of other interesting activities and of course enjoying time in the sunshine. Keep going, you are doing really well.

Last week, I told you that my street was organising a Bingo night on Friday. Well, it was a big success! All the neighbours sat in their front gardens and the numbers were called out with a loud speaker. Whenever someone won a line or full house there was lots of clapping and cheering - there was a great atmosphere and I enjoyed it more than I expected to, especially when we won a prize for getting a line! We have all agreed to do it again this Friday and I’m looking forward to it.

We’ve also continued with our new tradition of baking and this week Lucinda and I made banana bread. We are enjoying developing this new skill together. Have you learnt any new skills during this time?

Food and nutrition are of huge importance. Watch the clips on the link below and, with your parents, maybe create a shopping list for a meal?

Can you make that meal or recipe?

How many ingredients do you need?

What food groups have you included?

Can you create a project? Visit:

Think about which country/countries your ingredients come from, locate them on a map and work out how far food items travel to get to your plate. When you have created your meal, you could sketch a diagram detailing the journey the food has taken, adding captions.

Remember, it is important that you do some maths every day. You can complete the ‘5 a day’ on Corbett maths as well as Active Learn, White Rose, Topmarks and Times Tables Rockstars.

Also, don’t forget to go to  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

Try some of the English lessons. Sometimes you might recap things we have already learnt, for example using apostrophes or expanded noun phrases. Sometimes there will be new learning, for example using ellipsis. There are also reading lessons. This week it is London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd.

Do you remember that we were studying Earth and Space in science? I thought you might enjoy creating some space art! Ask an adult to help you research the artist Peter Thorpe and look at some of the examples of his abstract rockets. Create your own space/rocket/planet picture in the style of Peter Thorpe. Use any paper, colours and materials you have available. Enjoy getting creative!

On Friday 1st May, BookTrust are holding a Pyjamarama Day. This is to celebrate the bedtime story and reading together when families across the country can join in some story-filled fun at home. Why not take a look!

I hope I’ve given you some ideas for activities to try during this week. Have fun everyone and stay safe!
