Image of ‘Go Big’ Year 6

Hello Year 6,

I hope you have been able to get a break from your online studies last week?

Maybe some of you have not put your alarms on and stayed in bed a little bit longer than you did when it was term time and felt like you have had a break from your new norm? It’s been a fantastic week weather-wise to be outside!

I know some of you will be quite sad as you may have had planned holidays with your loved ones over these two weeks. My family and I should have been in Wales. We have been reminding ourselves of what we would have been doing, however we know that when the time comes to do things like that, how much more we will appreciate every moment in the future.

Whatever you decide to do this week, please do not forget the importance of reading!

The image at the top of the page is of a book that Mrs Evans and I would like to recommend to all Y6s.

The coming weeks are an important time for you to prepare for your move to your chosen high schools.

In school and online, we will be providing ‘Transition to Secondary School’ activities related to some of the subjects discussed in the book that we think you will enjoy and will be useful for you to complete.

So if you are looking for your next book, have some pocket money left to spend or an idea for a gift then this is an essential read over the summer.  It is a book very similar to the ‘You Are Awesome’ handbook that we referred to a lot in school. However, ‘Go Big’ is a practical, funny guide to being awesome at Secondary School, full of tips and advice on all the things to help you with your transition.

Did you watch the Space Rocket launch on Saturday night?

History was made when SpaceX (Elon Musk’s company) sent NASA astronauts into space from the same launch pad in Florida as the Apollo 11 Moon landings of the 1960’s.

The craft, named Crew Dragon, blasted off at 20:22 heading to the International Space Station. It was carrying two American astronauts, Doug Hurley and Robert Behken, who were launched into space at a speed of over 17,000 miles per hour. If you were lucky then you might have caught sight of the rocket as it orbited the Earth for the second time just after 10pm. I managed to see the International Space Station ( it looks like a sparkling, moving star that you can track on an App) but unfortunately we didn’t get to see the rocket- i’d love to know if you did! They have made it onto the Space Station and you can watch their interview as they docked on the BBC website.

Thank you to all of you who have been in touch sharing your work and achievements - it’s been lovely to hear from you. Obviously, this week would ordinarily be another week of the holidays but if you would like to continue with your home learning please have a look at the ‘National Oak Academy’ website, it has some really useful lessons and activities and of course the BBC Bitesize website.

Missing you all still very much,

Stay safe,

love Mrs Jones and Mrs Stanley xx
